MISSIONThe mission of Help is Here 4 Children is to provide the evidence based Kazdin Method® Parent Management Training Program to parents who are seeking help with their children who are exhibiting aggressive, oppositional, defiant, and other anti-social behaviors. To meet the current need and demand of parents requesting the treatment program, a significant increase in certified Kazdin Method® PMT Behavior Specialists need to be trained and available to provide treatment that is both accessible and affordable for families.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND INSTRUCTIONAL NEED
Due to an increase in children with disruptive behavioral disorders, and as one of very few evidence based treatment programs recognized by the CDC for children who have been diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, or those children exhibiting oppositional, defiant, aggressive behaviors, PMT treatment is in high demand. The lead researcher, Dr. Alan Kazdin, has retired from his position at Yale and the program has limited training available. Anecdotally, there are five people that are able to train and certify Kazdin Method® PMT specialists and four of them are no longer providing training or have retired. Tracie Bush, the one person still actively training Kazdin Method® PMT specialists, is also the main provider of direct PMT service to parents through her company, The Parent Management Training Institute. Her time to train and certify consultants is incredibly limited. Tracie Bush reports she has trained about 30 clinicians since 2012 and is not aware of whether any of them continue to implement the program with parents, and if so, with fidelity. Additionally, many of those previously certified KM®PMT consultants are either private pay or limited to in-state clients due to licensing restrictions. While this existing availability gap proves the need for an instructional intervention, there is also a strategy development component in terms of the sustainability of the treatment as an effective option in the future. The Parent Management Training Institute’s ability to continue providing both client and consultant support that meets the needs of the demand is limited. Current training is costly and time intensive for both the trainer and the trainee. Due to limits with current resources, integrity to the delivery of this systematic program is not monitored and data on treatment effectiveness is not collected after certification. This suggests that there is an instructional need for creating more effective, accessible, and efficient consultation certification and continued monitoring of fidelity and treatment success rates after certification.
AIM
The training will provide efficient and effective instruction that will result in highly qualified behavior specialists certified to deliver the Kazdin METHOD® Parent Management Training program with fidelity and will be a means to acquiring increased data collection, providing advanced training, and building a network of providers through a community of practice.
TARGET AUDIENCE / LEARNER CHARACTERISTICS
Behavior therapists
Child psychologists / School psychologists
Special education teachers
Pre-service therapists
Child psychologists / School psychologists
Special education teachers
Pre-service therapists
- Adult learners with previous university / undergraduate degrees in fields of education or mental health field
- Learners who seek flexible, asynchronous, relevant, and efficient training and support that leads to initial KM®PMT certification
- Learners who are motivated to update and further their education and training after initial KM®PMT certification that was acquired prior to this course development and availability
DELIVERY MODEL
This course will be provided through an online learning experience that will include both synchronous and asynchronous activities and include independent and collaborative opportunities. Frequent practice of the skills will be provided through interactive sessions where students are able to receive feedback, as well as provide feedback to others. Students will be given opportunities to work with real parents and scenarios using role play, recorded sessions, and case studies. The purpose of the online delivery model is to allow students to access the course from anywhere in the world to broaden diverse participation, support an inclusive learning environment, and ultimately meet the target aim of increasing the number of highly trained behavior specialists in an efficient manner. This project will focus on the asynchronous components of the training program and will be designed to complement the synchronous course companion to the overall training program. The characteristics of the learners identified through front-end analysis supports this model of hybrid instruction that will include flexibility in engagement options, highly relevant activities, and efficient acquisition of the knowledge and skills needed to attain certification.
